Before a trading result tells you anything useful, you need to know where it came from. A backtest, a demo and a live account record provide different kinds of evidence. Calling each one “performance” leaves the most important distinction unresolved.

Name the evidence before judging it

A backtest applies a strategy to historical information. A demo can show a workflow without putting real money into trades. A live record reflects actual activity, but still needs dates, costs and account context to mean much.

Ask for the explanation behind the chart. What period does it cover? Which version of the strategy was used? Does the balance include deposits or withdrawals? A polished screenshot cannot answer those questions on its own.

Make the comparison visible

Create a short record for each result: test type, market, period, starting conditions and costs. Add the largest decline shown and note any missing periods. Keep gaps visible. An unanswered question does not become evidence because you fill it with an assumption.

Now compare like with like. A result after charges and one before charges measure different things. Mark that difference before drawing a conclusion. This is a practical way to organise evidence, not a rating system or an investment recommendation.

Check what changes outside the test

QuantConnect’s documentation describes data and execution differences between backtests and live trading. Ask how the test represents the conditions the proposed account would face. A historical calculation and a live order do not necessarily use identical information or execute in the same way.
